HAIRSTROKE BROWS

by Illuminate INK

Achieve soft, natural-looking eyebrows with our hair stroke technique, also known as nano hair strokes. This method is designed to mimic the natural flow, direction, and texture of real brow hairs by creating fine, hair-like strokes within the skin.

Hair strokes are ideal for clients with finer, more delicate brow hair or those experiencing slight gaps and unevenness, where a subtle enhancement is desired rather than a filled-in makeup effect. The goal is to blend seamlessly with your natural brows and create an effortless, realistic result.

This technique requires the right conditions to heal beautifully. It works best on normal to dry skin with minimal pore visibility and softer hair texture. For clients with oilier skin, larger pores, or very coarse, dense brow hair, we may recommend an alternative technique that will provide a more stable and long-lasting result.

At Illuminate Ink Studio, we focus on selecting the most appropriate technique for each individual client rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Our artists are trained to evaluate your skin, hair pattern, and desired outcome to ensure the most natural and predictable healed results.

We work with high-quality, safety-tested pigments, including Etalon Mix, known for their clean healing and controlled color evolution over time. Combined with refined technique and attention to detail, this allows us to create results that remain soft, balanced, and natural as they heal.

Contraindications

The hair stroke technique requires the right skin and hair conditions to heal clean and crisp. During your consultation, we carefully assess whether this method is suitable for you.

Hair type & existing brow pattern
Clients with very thick, coarse, or dense brow hair may not be ideal candidates for hair strokes, as the strokes may not blend naturally with the existing hair. In such cases, we may recommend an alternative technique for a more realistic result.

Skin type
Oily, thick, or porous skin may not retain fine strokes well, as they can heal softer or slightly blurred. If needed, we may advise a powder or combination technique for better longevity and stability.

Skin conditions in the treatment area
Eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, rosacea, sunburn, or any irritation in the brow area.

Scarring tendencies
History of keloids, hypertrophic scarring, or abnormal pigmentation during healing.

Medical conditions
Bleeding disorders, hemophilia, use of blood thinners, or conditions that affect healing.

Autoimmune conditions
Any condition that may compromise skin regeneration and healing results.

Pregnancy & nursing
We recommend postponing the procedure during this time.

Medications
Use of Accutane within the past 6–12 months.

Allergies
Known allergies to pigments or topical anesthetics.

Recent cosmetic procedures
Botox or fillers in the brow/forehead area require a minimum 2–3 week gap before or after the procedure.

Infections
Any active viral, bacterial, or fungal infection in the treatment area.

Oncology treatments
Clients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation must wait until treatment is completed and provide medical clearance.

Each case is unique, and if hair strokes are not the best option, we will always recommend a more suitable technique to ensure the most natural and long-lasting result.

Questions?

READ F.A.Q.

No — while both techniques aim to create a natural, hair-like effect, they are performed very differently. Microblading is a manual technique that uses a blade to create small cuts in the skin, where pigment is then deposited. The hair stroke (nano) technique is performed with a machine using a fine needle, which implants pigment through controlled, gentle movements without cutting the skin. Because of this, the hair stroke technique is generally less traumatic to the skin and allows for more precise, controlled results. It also tends to heal softer and more consistently when performed on suitable skin types. While both methods are designed to mimic natural brow hairs, the nano hair stroke technique is considered a more advanced and modern approach, offering greater flexibility, control, and long-term skin integrity.
An ideal candidate for hair stroke brows is someone who has naturally soft, fine brow hairs but may experience slight gaps or uneven density. This technique is perfect for clients who want to enhance what they already have — creating the appearance of fuller brows without a filled-in or makeup look. Hair strokes are especially suited for those who prefer a very natural, airy result and do not want to draw in their brows daily. The effect is soft, delicate, and mimics real hair rather than creating defined borders. This technique is also a great option for: Clients seeking the most natural-looking enhancement Men who want subtle brow improvement without a powder effect Individuals experiencing hair loss (such as alopecia), where a realistic hair-like appearance is desired However, suitability depends on both hair and skin type. Hair strokes may not be the best option for clients with very thick, coarse brow hair, as the strokes may not blend seamlessly. Similarly, oily or more porous skin may not retain fine strokes as crisply, which can affect the final result. For this reason, every client is carefully evaluated before the procedure. If hair strokes are not the ideal choice, we may recommend alternative techniques such as combination or powder brows to ensure the most natural, balanced, and long-lasting outcome.
The longevity of hair stroke brows depends on several factors, including your skin type, pigment selection, technique, and the level of saturation used during the procedure. On average, you can expect hair stroke brows to last between 1 to 2 years, gradually fading over time. Skin type plays an important role in how the strokes heal and age. Drier skin tends to retain finer, crisper strokes for longer, while oilier or more porous skin may cause the strokes to soften or blur more quickly. Lifestyle and aftercare also influence longevity. Following proper aftercare helps support optimal healing and color retention. To maintain the result, a refresh session is typically recommended around the 12-month mark. However, we always suggest scheduling a yearly evaluation first, so we can assess your brows and determine the most appropriate next step. It’s also important to understand that every result is customized. If you prefer a softer, more temporary look, we can adjust pigment choice and saturation to allow for a lighter and faster fade. Our goal is always to create results that age beautifully and remain natural over time.
Most clients describe the procedure as very tolerable and much less uncomfortable than they expected. Before we begin, we may apply a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable throughout the session. As we work, we can also reapply numbing as needed, so the sensation remains manageable from start to finish. You may feel light scratching, pressure, or a mild tingling sensation, but it should not be painful. Pain sensitivity can vary from person to person and may also depend on factors such as stress levels, sleep, or your individual tolerance. However, our approach is always gentle and controlled, with your comfort as a priority. If at any point you feel discomfort, we adjust the process and ensure you remain at ease.
